Services

What I do

I take technically complex creative visions and make them real. From the initial spec through opening night, I'm the person who sees where the design brief meets the physical world.

Primary

Technical Direction for Immersive Installations

Your immersive installation opens on schedule, runs without technical incidents, and delivers the audience experience you designed. I work with artists, studios, and experiential agencies from concept through opening-night commissioning.

Primary

Theatrical & Venue AV Consulting

Your venue gets AV systems designed by someone who understands what actually happens on stage, not just what's in the equipment rack. System design, vendor oversight, commissioning through first production.

Process

How I work

Four steps. No surprises.

You describe the project

Tell me what you're building. I'll ask a few questions, then I'll be honest: am I the right person, or would someone else serve you better? My reputation is built on honest fit assessment, not closing every engagement.

We scope the engagement

You get a specific proposal that shows I understood your project. Level of involvement, timeline, deliverables, and expectations. You know exactly what you're buying before anything is signed.

You have a senior technical partner

During the engagement, I own the technical layer. Regular check-ins, vendor coordination, and problem-solving. You focus on the creative and business side.

You keep the knowledge

System specs, vendor contacts, runbooks, documentation. The institutional knowledge is yours. It lives in your files, not in my head.

About

John Ray Rappa

I've spent 25 years at the intersection of art, theater, and live production. I've led technical production for Lightning in a Bottle for 10 consecutive years, served as Studio Director at Hybycozo, and helped bring 13 unique immersive exhibitions to life at Onedome Global, where over 100,000 visitors passed through.

The rare thing isn't any one skill. It's having worked across lighting, sound, projection, fabrication, show control, and smart environments long enough to see how they fit together in ways that specialists in a single domain usually don't.

I consult, direct, and design. I don't sell equipment and I don't perform installation labor. That independence means my recommendations are driven by what fits your project, not by what's in the warehouse.
